Football: Italy into Euro 2008 quarter-finals after toppling 10-man France

World champions Italy beat old foes France 2-0 on Tuesday to go through to the Euro 2008 quarter-finals. The French endured a wretched night, suffering two major blows in the first 25 minutes, with first star midfielder Franck Ribery stretchered off then Eric Abidal red-carded with Andrea Pirlo converting the penalty. Despite the catastrophic defeat France coach Raymond Domenech, remained stoic in defeat.
"They showed energy. They showed something, its a pity because the circumstances were against us. "This team has something in its guts, it has qualities. We were 10 against 11 and we had also lost Ribery. This team has a real future and potential," as quoted from the coach words.
Soccer is a game filled with energy. There is also a need for a strong sense of teamwork as it takes 11 soccer players to work together and score a goal, there is no one-man show in such situations. Each team mate would then have to take an effort to make personal contacts, and establish a relationships amongst the rest of the team members to get a better feel of each other. With that, they are able to point out each others strong points and deliver their "roles" on the field. Each of the members play a very important role into either defending or attacking their opponents. For example, the goal keeper plays the role of preventing the opponents from scoring.
However, there may be an anxiety to win the game, for example France, that leads them to misuse their important role in the game. Eric Abdial getting the red card is one of the most crucial mistake he made during the match. Having get "send off" or "red carded" does not allow him to play in the next two matches. This might greatly affect the other team memebers as each individual as a "role" to play on the field. Leaving him out, the communication on the field is broken thus only having 10 men on the field thus being defeated.
I've watched the match and felt the tension and struggle in the game. There signs of non verbal communications as how each player would know when to receive and pass the ball on. The coach blamed their lost on the circumstances, i would agree to a certain extent as France and Italy both showed they're fighting spirit!

I wouldn’t agree with what most of the things I wouldn’t agree with what most of the things tom had said. But somehow I agree that there’s no one-man show in football, but hey, every team has a playmaker. For example, zidane was France playmaker and captain for the country. His influence on the field play a big part in the whole tournaments he has played. Team mates respected him and showing their never give up attitude, going for every ball like bull. If it wasn’t zidane, I doubt France would qualified for World Cup 2006 final. Discipline plays a big part in football too. Too bad, zidane uncontrollable temper leaded him to head butt Italian’s defender, materazzi. Reports claimed that materazzi had insulted zidane’s family thus leading zidane head butting him. Furthermore, it was a disgrace to get send off during the tournament’s final game but it was zidane last game before he retires from international football. If he didn’t get send off, I doubt Italy would won the penalty kick. With zidane scoring records, I’d say is 90% of him converting the penalty kick into the back of the net successfully. As you can see, zidane has such a great influence on the field. As for the euro 2008, France was obviously the underdog team. They lack of communication and style and without zidane they struggle to play good football. France will only make it big if they are able to find a playmaker like zidane, which I doubt they would able to do so. With manager like Domenech around they won’t make it big. had said. haha first of all, i figure you're a HUGEEE soccer fan! yes teamwork is very important during a soccer match. they must also be able to communicate effectively using non verbal cues to be able to win. non verbal cues in the sense that they must be ready to accept the soccer ball when it is passed to each teammate or when he wants to score. goal keepers play a very important role too as they would need to guess or read the minds of the opponents because the goal posts is huge thus i think this all depends on luck :)
Personally, im not a fan of soccer, so i didn't watch the match. but i can imagine how terrible it must have felt for the player to be sent off court, and how frustrated the team must have felt at that point. i have been in one of those situations before, and it definitely does NOT feel good playing handicap. but i guess the fact that they still fought on and didn't give up showed the team spirit in them, and their willingness to fight for the team till the end! :)
wow. i din know u watched soccer! okay i've seen another side of leanne today. if not for you, i would not realise that soccer involves group communication too. diff people play diff roles in the team, with all of them having the same goals. and yes. group synergy is impt too. asking a goalkeeper to play a striker's role and vice versa does not make logical sense as the latter would fare poorer than the latter since he is played out of position.
